I just got a new drive shaft and a used transmission installed. After waiting a month with promises of "almost done". I went and picked it up after losing confidence in the mechanic. He notes that it will not move out of Low gear.

Here's what I see: The gearbox would not move from LOW when I was at the shop picking it up. but I got it to move finally.

1. When put in neutral, the little red light on the shift case does not turn red unless I manually hold it forward a bit. All others stay red (Park, drive, Reverse, etc). The vehicle does roll with the the red light off, but I can only move the gearbox while holding the neutral in place. Seems like gear shift loosey-goosey - was not this way before.

2. While in LOW, I was able to drive it home about 3 miles with it struggling the whole time, maxing out at just under 30 mph - no higher.

3. Now that I can move the gearbox, with some difficulty, I get the warning chime when it's in Neutral and High.

4. Just did a test on my street. With it in HIGH, it drives normally up to 30 mph, no struggle, but the double-gear icon "Transfer gearbox in neutral" warning chime is on. I can distinctly tell 3 positions. It chimes in the bottom two positions N and H.

5. While on my street, I turned into a cul de sac in LOW to turn around. Put it in reverse and it didn't respond. Had to go to park, back to neutral, to reverse, jiggling it, etc. It went into reverse after a few tries. I can hear a little click on the left side of the dashboard near the side mirror adjustors when I move through gears (P, R, N, D, etc.) while in park.

6. In LOW, I see MANUAL as a mode option and when in HIGH, I see only SPORT as a mode option.

7. Tried driving it manual (I know how to drive a stick - 5 tons in the Army) no luck, struggling to reach 15mph.

8. Locked differential?

Do I just need to have the warning lights reset? I also had some engine work, so the batter may have been disconnected? I feel like this is a "final check/adjustment" item that should be performed that may have been missed, maybe a battery issue? Or do I have a poor transmission install?

I've been searching the forum, but can't find this specific issue. Any ideas?

Mechanic told me over the phone last week, I needed a transfer case "cable", I guess he kept checking and when I picked it up today, he says I need a new transfer case and then said maybe a transfer case repair - thought something was stuck from when the drive shaft broke and punched a hole in the transmission. Yeah, that's how I got here... :)

Wow.........

You say that the red light is on. The red light should only come on when the center differential is locked (difflock, do a search on this) . What year is your DII? You, or someone, are going to have to crawl under there with a 10 mm wrench and make sure the CDL spigot is in the disengaged position.

There is a C-Clip that holds the automatic transmission shift cable to a bracket under the drivers side of the vehicle. I incorrectly seated this and had it fall off after I replaced my t-case and experienced similar shifting problems.

Carry out these two simple checks and get back to us.

Thanks for the troubleshooting tips, OptumisDuff. After getting underneath based on your description, I didn't find anything. Came back inside and Googled, turns out I don't have it. I have a 2002 Discovery.

Any other tips?

Drives just fine in HIGH gear, just had the blaring warning light and noise. Haven't driven. Taking to a random transmission shop tomorroe if I don't get anything that resolves it here.

Any help is appreciated, thanks, guys...

Do NOT take it to a random trans shop. Sounds like that got you where you are today. You need to get it to a reputable INDY LR shop. These are not "random" vehicles. Unless someone has at least a minimum knowledge of LR's, they can quickly get in over their heads.
Also, I hope you didn't pay the guy who screwed it up.

I misunderstood the part about the red light. Now I get it. Sorry.

I think there is something going on with your xyz switch...........Pretty sure these can be adjusted. I have never done it.

in any case don't go to a random shop.
