Help!

After the water pump on my 300Tdi Discovery started to squeal recently, I changed the water pump and drive belt... a few days later the new [pattern spare] pump started to squeal... after taking off the drive belt i found that the bearings on the alternator were a bit rough... so I changed that, just in case i had mis-heard where the squeal was coming from!! Water pump still squealed, so it was changed again, [this time for a more expensive version, but still a pattern spare]. I have tried everything I can think of, changing bearings in the tensioner, making sure that the tensioner was working freely, but still no joy. It's as if the tensioner is too tight......

Hope somebody can offer some advice, has anybody had the same problem?

Hi Jaffa,
The 300Tdi has always suffered with belt squeal.One thing to look at is the tensioner,check closely where the two halves join,there is a "gasket" between them.If there is a piece of it sticking out then you will need a new tensioner.Another thing is the surfaces the belt runs on,the pulleys etc,try roughing the smooth surfaces up a little with emery cloth and clean out the grooved ones with a wire brush.My last suggestion is a new belt,but if you can get hold of one,a Gates belt not an LR one.

I have had the tensioner off a few times, renewed the bearing in it, cleaned it up etc, etc. After lubricating the two halves to allow if to move more freely we did do 6 or 7 miles with very little squeal.... but then it came back again!

I changed the drive belt with the first water pump, but this was a LR one...

Think I'll try a new tensioner and perhaps the belt you mentioned, together with cleaning out the grooves/roughing up the plain pulley's etc.

Would this noise from the water pump bearings be caused by the slight misalignment from a worn tensioner assembly?

I can't say that I have heard a water pump on a Tdi make a noise,but as an LR tech,I would only have fitted a genuine part.I would try the belt etc first and see if the noise has gone.

Just replaced the Tensioner assembly and no squeal!!! :clap:

Still got to do some more work, as its now loosing water from one of the gaskets behind the water pump/tensioner assembly :complain:


Job for the weekend I think... at least SWMBO will stop complaining about the horrible noise!

Glad you've got the noise sorted,that gasket is a common fault but quite a nice job to do
