The ball shaped item is a vacuum retention device. That is, it gets a vacuum from the motor and retains it until it is used no matter what is happening with the motor at the time. The vacuum is used to operate some heater controls.
@lwbblue: I put my hand there and I felt the suction and the idle went down then leveled out....so I checked the hose and it was cracked... I then replaced the hose...it ran good for a while but then started to stutter again.....here's a question:
The idle stepper motor that I have is from a Chevy astro.
1. Can that affect the idling?
2. Should I get a Lucas idle stepper motor?
@roverandom: you suggest that I replace all the hoses.... How many hoses are there to replace... I thought it was
1. The hose from the top of the plenum to the forward part of the distributor
2. The hose from the vacuum ball to the passenger side of the plenum.....
I have already replaced those hoses today.
