My 1998 D1 has a receiver for a trailer hitch but it isn't wired for the electrical connection for brake and running lights. Is there a fairly simple way to do this myself?

arrggghh.. I just sold the WHOLE stock wiring kit, still new in the box that would have been exactly what you needed.

You'll need the whole kit.. about $175 from dealer, less from aftermarket sources.

Atlantic British $99, easy to do and much better than doing it yourself otherwise you run the risk of totally screwing up signals, brake and backup lights IMHO.

The pinout for the Disco circular connector located behind the panel of the right rear light fixture is as follows:

Red with Orange stripe is taillight.
Red with Black stripe is taillight (you only need one so pick either)
Purple with Green stripe is brake light.
Green with Red stripe is left turn signal.
Green with White stripe is right turn signal.
Black is ground.
