Guys, remember im somwhat new to the world of offroading and there's a question ive been dyin to know the answer to....its a little silly and even tho the answer might sem obvious, there is always the chance for an extraordinary answer...so here goes....

When a rover does water crossings like the one in the picture (obviously not to that extreme but i thought the pics show just how incredably awsome Rovers are)..... does water rush into the cabin???? I've seen tons of pictures of people doin it with their rovers and they are cool about it...i would be freaking out...my CD changer would be a goner, the carpet would get all wet and after drying would have that humid stinch and then the floor pans run the risk of becoming rusty from the inside!

I forgot to mention my dad had an 1986 Jeep Cherokee and during one of the major floods we had here about 6 or 7 years ago...we tried that and water rushed in by the bottom of the doors, and the Trans went CAPOOT...is this the case with Rovers as well?..or are they truly special vehicles?

Yes water does get into the cab, and if you have carpetd and CD's they will get wet and be destroyed.
1) Either buy a Series Landy with no carpets and mount your electronic stuff high on the dash,
2) make sure that your rubber seals on the doors is 100%. If all your seals is good then the water will not come in, having said that, there is a lot of places in the cab wher there is tiny holes, so water does not only come in though the doors.
3) As you stated, the biggest problem lies with the mechanicals.
The Diffs & gearbox have breathing holes that let water in. If this is not drained and the oil replaced regularly it could kill them.
4) The enjin is another problem. Petrols need to have all the electrical parts water proofed and the cooling fans need tyo be of the tipe that can stop otherwist they will break on hitting water. Further mods need to be done on the oil intakes and dipstick as well as the air intake caburator and /or diesel pump.

You can get a "waterproofing" kit for series landys. They are available in the UK. It consist of all the things that you have to replace in order to get the Landy to become a Submarine. I have seen a test of one of these kits in a Landrover Magazine a few years back (2000?) The guy had only his head, the top of the windscreen and the snorkel sticking out of the water!

So it can be done!

One last thing, NO QUESTION IS SILLY, ONLY THE FOOL THAT DOES NOT ASK QUESTIONS IS SILLY!!!!

Here's how not to do it!

Observation:

1. He's just got into deeper water (calm water) and dropped his speed (bow wave should be bigger). The river behind him is shallower, hence the rippled water.
2. Nowhere to climb out (bridge photo).
3. Should have taped up his doors and climbed in through the window before starting.
4. No evidence of recovery gear, so if he stalls, he'll have to dive under water to affix recovery rope/cable/strap.
5. Should have fitted a blind.
6. No breather pipe attached to his exhaust.
7. Functional, but crappy snorkel.
8. He did get one part right; he left part of his window down, although I doubt the rivers deep enough to fill the car totally with water.

At MAR last year I spent an hour in a river (engine running) with water up to the bottom seat cushion. I also thought my CD changer was toast but it's still working. The CDs were all dirty but I wiped them off and they work fine.

As far as the carpet goes, any LR owner should remove the carpet because the sound deadening under your carpet is like a sponge and keeps the water (that leaks in thru the windshield, or alpine windows, etc) in and rusts out your floor boards.

I always remove the carpet and cushion on my Rovers.

Dean Brown added a water pump in the back of his Disco to drain out the water. Dean does A LOT of water crossings.

Wet Feet

First time I took my 98 Disco to a "Touchless" car wash my feet got wet when the hi-powered spray cracked the seal at the base of the driver side door. Don't know if it has been permamently damaged or what but I'm not planning any river crossings anytime soon.

Wading in water above your bumpers is dangerous stuff, and should only be attempted in emergencies. Sure, there are times when you can get away with it, but considering the risks, is it worth it? Besides possibly hydrolocking your engine, destroying the cats and the brushes in your alternator, you run the risk of damaging the interior of the vehicle, destroying your CD changer and frying the ECU. Is all this worth a couple of photos, and kudos from your mates.
