AM Radio not working

I just got a 2000 Discovery II with the Harmon audio package. Everything seems to work just great except AM reception is practically nonexistant. I get better reception in my 1980 Chevrolet van without an antenna.

I know the antennas are in the rear windows, but is there a system/switch/fuse/whatever that controls the AM antenna that could go out? I listen to AM most of the time and it would be great to get it working.

Thanks,
Ken

Do your windows have aftermarket tint? If so that is the most likely cause. For some reason the tint has almost zero impact on FM reception but will just about eliminate all AM reception. This is a very common problem with BMW's, I work at a BMW shop and get this complaint about once a month from a customer. The problem is 2 fold, first the mylar in the tint blocks some of the signal and second the glue in the tint will degrade the AM antenna. With some of the BMW's there is an AM receiver box that sometimes has a loose connection and this will improve the AM reception once the connection is tightened. But if the connection at the AM box is ok most of the time there is no fix other than trying to add an external AM antenna. If you are looking for talk radio or sports radio for games your best bet is to get XM/Sirus radio.
