New to the classic LRs. I am looking at a 1981 Stage 1 Station Wagon. I am wondering is the factory hard top is removable and can be replaced with a soft top. In pictures I see that it has a vertical door instead of tailgate, I am not sure if that matters. What about doors?

Thanks for helping a new enthusiast out...

Your answer is yes and no. (It's a 109 right?)

Yes the top is easily removable, but it gets you nothing but a stupid looking derelict to drive. Unless you are lucky to have a five door built in one of the two years they made the rear passenger doors with removable tops. So--- you can remove the top, remove the door tops from the front doors, might be LUCKY enough to remove the door tops from the rear doors (not likely) and now you are stuck with the door post between front and rear door. I have considered making an arch to bolt to the top of it to make it "look" right, sort of like a radar arch on a boat. To remove the top, you first had to remove the back door, now you install the tailgate and latches you bought for the job.

It has been done, but is a lot of work. One fellow cut his "B" post and put a joint in it so he could re-assemble it later and also made a second set of rear doors that he cut down to match the front doors.

Does this help?

A "Stage one" is a transition stage between the series 3 and the 110. It is a factory transition on a leaf sprung 109 chassis (only in 5 door IIRC) with the grill moved forward like on the 110's and with a factory installed V8 and I think they all had 5 speed gearboxes. They also had the 3.54 diff ratio from the factory. Very under powered in stock format because of the 3.54 ratio and the detuned 3.5, I think it was in the low 100's for HP, partly because of a restrictor put in the carb.

The Stage One was built in 88", 109" 3 door, 5 door and Pickup, and is called a Series III Stage One.
"Stage One" refered to the first stage of the BMC reorganization of Land Rover. It was built from 1981 to early 1985. They had FOUR speed LT95 transmissions, full time 4wd. My son's has a 3.9 and goes like a rocket. Probably faster than my 4.2 110
