Has anybody had a new remote/key cut and programmed at a Locksmith?

Is this possible?

( I know test book and that, but I do remember having a BMW key cut once at a Locksmith in NJ )

Let’s Break The Myth, Lr3 Keys Are Not Really That Expensive, The Key Must Be Cut By The Factory, Not The Dealer, Unless It Is A Big Ny Dealer Or Something That Has The Laser Machine. Cost About $12 To Have The Key Cut. Go To The Dealer With Proof You Actually Own The Lr And The Vin Number And They Will Get You The Key.
The Fob Can Be Bought On Ebay For $10 Or So, But Be Sure It Is The Correct One, The One I Got Matched The Numbers On The One I Had, So All Was Good.
The Dealer Will Program The Fob For You In About ½ Hour At Their Rates Per Hour (shop Around If The Dealer Wants $300 For This!) This Should Cost About $40, More Than A Ford, But Then You Are Not Driving A Ford; You Are Driving A Luxury, Beautiful Truck.
Be Sure You Take All Fobs You When You Go To Programming Otherwise You Will Be Screwed! If You Cannot Afford This You Should Have Bought A Ford!

Hate to burst your bubble but LR3s have Ford blood in em ;) Nice tips on getting keys.

well, sorta, wasn't it Euroford blood (now indian Tata ownership blood)? Which is a mostly separate entity from US Ford? I doubt that much if any R/D, tech or design comes or came from US Ford (thank god) and not the other way around. Maybe some fords having LR blood in them... I could be wrong.

Bruce, so the key fob can be disassembled to take out the old key and put the new one in? Does the dealer do that?

I have a brand new key fob with an uncut key. Trying to figure out how to either get the existing blank key cut or get a new key cut and installed in the FOB. What I should I do? Thanks.

Key shank can be easily replaced. Only one pin is holding it. If you do not want to do by yourself, any locksmith can to do with small fee.

We carry OEM remote (no key) at a fraction of dealer price.. LR dealer should able to order the key shank for you based on VIN. Once remote is programmed to your VIN, it can not be reprogrammed. In other words, used remote CAN NOT be reprogrammed.

dealers don't order the shank.

Its all or nothing.

as long as the damn thing starts the car you are fine.

if no remotes work and its an 06 or 05 then look at the green and white wire coming on the passenger side. sometimes we can bring back a key that lost its programming but rarely. And if you lost the key and its been refound chances are it can't get repgmed back to the vehicle. The programming from ids locks out all keys not at the vehicle during programming.

I just ordered a shank from the dealer, got it in today, I also have a ebay purchased key fob. All I need to do now is get the Fob programed and the Shank installed on the fob. PROBLEMS IS: dealer is saying they dont think the fob I bought is programable and the only way to find out is to try. And for them to try is gonna cost me $85.

Anyone think its worth the try?

A FOB I bought just happen to be OEM, but Canadian. My dealer said, those have to be programmed by a Canadian dealer. He did confirm that If I had a "OEM" American FOB, it could be reprogrammed for another vehicle. I am a machinist, and had cut my own key blank. So now I have a perfect key Blank, but no FOB to re program. I'm still searching for a FOB, from an American vehicle.
