I want to get another/spare strap. After this weekend's event with the ******* Bronco recovery I realized I need to have a spare since there is some slight fraying due to that jackass' leaf spring. (incident can be see there http://www.landroversonly.com/forums/f17/bronco-recovery-fail-more-31163/)

I went to several "off-road" shops in Auburn, all they offered me was a 6klb strap that was 20'....I laughed and said good luck towing a little ford ranger with that and left.

Normally I would just make a trip to Northern Tool and pick up a solid 20k-30k 30' tow strap for cheap. but since there aren't any around here in Bama who has some suggestions?

I'm looking for stores that may have them or websites that take paypal who sell them.

I've already checked walmart, advanced auto, and autozone...nothing :complain:

The super wal-marts in my area have wised up and carry some decent straps now. They offer a 20klb and a 30klb strap, both are 30ft long. 4WP ( www.4wheelparts.com) carries the same straps (different brand name) for the same prices. $25.99 for the 20klb, and $35.99 for the 30klb.

Its not a snatch strap, but with loop ends and 20klb-30klb ratings they aren't bad for the price.

If you've already got a tow strap, I'd recommend in getting a jerk strap.

A jerk strap is more like a huge rubber band. When doing a recovery, attach the jerk strap and floor it. The jerk strap will stretch and then recoil. Very cool straps. Tow Rope, M-P Super-Yanker Kinetic Tow Rope

But if you're hell bent on getting another tow strap, get a nice one. 2" x 30' is good. I would not go with the 3".

EE sells some really nice straps. EE also includes a chafe guard with their straps that really comes in handy and adds life to your strap. https://www.expeditionexchange.com/straps/
Wow never heard them called jerk straps, interesting....

But yeah you won't get a snatch strap for a "cheap price", at least in my book. The same 2"x30' $25 tow strap is $55 as a snatch strap, $30 difference. I guess if you like doing through the bottomless thick goey slop mud it would be worth the $30, but in most cases on rocks/normal mud a tow strap would suffice.

As Hank alluded to, you need to be clear what you want. Do you want a two strap for towing a disabled vehicle? If that's what you need, then yes, 2" is fine. I prefer them at least 20' long so if the person I'm towing doesn't react quick on the brakes they don't ram me.
If the shop you went in you asked for a tow strap, what they showed you was fine.
If you want a recovery strap, you want something bigger and higher load capacity.

i said recovery strap. I don't need to tow anyone. i need to "recover" people lol.
Ah...well...you mentioned recovery, but then said

and that's what stuck in my mind.
If you can't find what you need, let me know. I have Northern and Tractor Supply both close, so I could always pick one up and mail it to you.

You should not use a tow rope for recoveries. Only ever use a snatch strap or KERR.

Don't worry about the bullshit about 2 inch or 3, has noting really to do with anything. It is usually the ends of the strap that give way anyhow. Look at the rating of the strap. Would get one that is rated around 8,000kg, which is around 20,000lb.

I think a "jerk" strap refers to the person using it that person thought they were referring to the strap.

Sorry to thread jack, but does anyone know a place that sells ARB Recovery Straps that ships to Canada? I cant for the life of me find a place round here that even has one, let alone competetive pricing.

Thanks.

I like 30 as you can usually set up w good footing. If the recoveree is in a particularly nasty spot you may need some separation.

A Kenetic recovery rope is a fabulous tool, but can be pretty dangerous if you aren't very careful. The thing people fail to grasp is the amount of energy stored up in the rope.
I go to Tractor Supply for lots of odds & ends, but if you're fooled into thinking they sell the highest quality, check these pics out.
The first one is one of Tractor Supply's 15Klb tow hooks, which opened right up when Forrest Clifton used his Jerk rope. His end had a good anchor, but the guy getting the jerk had the TS hook.
The 2nd pic is what the Jerk rope did to the back of Forrest's Rangie when the hook failed and it came back at him.

i've seen that happen with a winch cable and it went through the drivers seat:eek: luckly he was out and using the remote. i will never never use an open ended hook for any reason reguardless of the manufacturer. i always use shackles
